Three days in the Middle Ages

Since 2019, I have been volunteering in one of the most important historical re-enactments in Italy and certainly the most famous in Italy related to the figure of Matilda of Canossa, a woman of great power in an era - the Middle Ages - in which there are not many other examples in the female sphere of such great impact.

The event commemorates the meeting, which actually took place in 1111, between Matilda of Canossa and Emperor Henry V at the foot of Bianello Castle, a stronghold of the first line of defence of the Canossa domains still standing after centuries, perched on one of the four hills that give the town of Quattro Castella its name.

Over three days, hundreds of extras in medieval dress animate the meadows at the foot of the castle, recreating the camp that the emperor set up during the six-day stopover he made in this territory before returning over the Alps.

Since 2019, I have been in charge of all pre-event communication, video and photo documentation during the three days, and the production of post-event material.

This year I have mainly dedicated myself to the photographic aspect, collecting hundreds of images documenting the extraordinary richness of the event.
